Program note

Quarks Tropes is a piece for piano trio that is loosely based on the movements 'Truth' and 'Strange' from my piece for solo piano Finnegans Quarks Revival. The two movements of this work are essentially tropes on the earlier piano piece.

The etymological root of the word trope is derived from the Greek tropos, which means to turn or change. In linguistics it is a figure of speech consisting of a play on words. In literature it is a repeated symbol or theme. In music there are various meanings of the word. In Medieval music troping was a compositional technique by which new words or notes, counterpoint for example, were added to an existing tune. Ah, dirais-je vous maman is an example of textual troping. There are many texts that have been written to be sung to this tune. For example, Bah Bah Black Sheep or Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. There are many contemporary examples of this compositional idea. For instance, Weird Al Yankovic wrote new lyrics for Madonna's tune Like a Virgin and changed the title to Like a Surgeon.

The troping here consists of adding violin and cello parts to the preexisting piano part and in some instances extending and elaborating previous ideas. The piece is also somewhat referential to other pieces or genres, which can be considered a loose extension of troping technique.

This work was composed for the Trio Fibonacci during my residency at the Chapelle historique du Bon Pasteur in Montréal. It is dedicated to Guy Soucie, the director of the Chapelle historique du Bon Pasteur.

Nothing but the Truth est une œuvre pour trio avec piano basée sur les mouvements 'Truth' et 'Strange' de Finnegans Quarks Revival, une de mes oeuvres récentes pour piano solo. C'est essentiellement une trope sur l'œuvre précédente pour piano solo.

La racine du mot trope est tirée du grec tropos qui signifie tourner ou changer. En linguistique, un trope est une figure de style par laquelle un mot ou une expression est détourné de son sens propre. À l'origine, l'utilisation des tropes était, dans la musique médiévale, une technique de composition dans laquelle de nouvelles paroles ou de nouvelles notes (contrepoint) étaient ajoutées à une ligne musicale préexistante. Si nous considérons Ah, dirais-je vous maman, par exemple, nous voyons qu'il y a plusieurs textes qui ont été écrits pour cette mélodie tels Bah Bah Black Sheep, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star et la chanson de l'alphabet A, B, C, D, E, F, G, etc....

Ici, la technique de trope consiste à rajouter des parties complètement nouvelles pour violon et violoncelle à celle du piano. Cela crée, en effet, une nouvelle oeuvre. L'œuvre est également quelque peu référentiel. Ceci peut être considéré comme une extension de la technique de trope.

Cette œuvre à été composée pour Le Trio Fibonacci pendant ma résidence à la Chapelle historique du Bon Pasteur à Montreal. Elle est dédiée à Guy Soucie, le directeur du Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur.
